Why do you stand gazing up into Heaven?
Today, as I write this article, it is Ascension Day – 40 days after Jesus rose from the dead, nearly 2000 years ago.   It will be another 10 days before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost “……while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.  Two men stood by them in white apparel who said “men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Acts 1: 10,11

In a sense the angels were reminding the disciples that there was an awesome and exciting task lying ahead. Stop being immobilized – “don’t be so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good”. Get involved, engage without delay. They stopped gazing into heaven and returned to Jerusalem. They “continued with one accord in prayer and supplication” Acts 1:14. They received the Holy Spirit 10 days later and the church was birthed.

The Lord promised us that if we seek His Kingdom first, all things we need will be added to us. He will cause all things to work out for good. Let’s get on with Kingdom business:

  • Loving God and people
  • Praying and interceding
  • Sharing the gospel in season and out of season
  • Discipling those that have come into the Kingdom
  • Not neglecting the gathering of the saints
  • Keeping the unity and protecting the body against faultfinding and accusations
  • Tithing and sowing.

May the Lord find us busy as labourers in His Kingdom (vineyard) when He returns – to reward us according to our works.
